The EPP summit on Thursday will be a foreshadowing of the main concern on the EU Council agenda: immigration.
Maltese MEP Roberta Metsola said that the European People’s Party (EPP) is pushing hard for the doubling of the budget for migration as this will enable the move from aid to investment in the countries of origin of the migrants. Metsola said that the June summit always has immigration on the agenda and this had been the result of the insistence of the Gonzi administration, who had foreseen the need to keep the issue on the agenda.
Arriving at the EPP Summit will be beleaguered German Chancellor Angela Merkel, for whom a solution on the migration issue is crucial for her political survival. Observers among the EPP group are envisaging a solution which will keep Merkel, at the German helm and, by the end of the year, at the latest, a permanent solution for the issue of immigration.
