The 32-year-old who was killed last Thursday when the Cospicua construction site he was working on partially collapsed has been identified as Gambian national Sarjo Conteh, with his friends now seeking to establish contact with his relatives back home.
A wall collapsed during excavation works on the site at Sqaq l-Erwieħ, killing Conteh and leaving his 35-year-old colleague Valletta resident Johann Ellul, fighting for his life.
His death, five months after that of Miriam Pace in her own home after excavation works on a neighbouring site triggered a collapse, has reignited debate on the safety of construction sites. As she expressed sympathy to Conteh’s family, Pace’s daughter Ivana Portelli did not mince her words, stating that it was clear that nothing has been done in the wake of the tragedy that befell her family.
Conteh’s friend Ebrima Drammeh, a fellow Gambian national, took to Facebook to appeal to anyone who may know how to contact his family to come forward, asking them to contact him personally.
Drammeh also appeared on an online Gambian TV show to discuss the case and attempt to trace Conteh’s family.
