Valletta friar removed from Parish Priest following theft allegations

Parish Priest Fr Deo Debono of Saint Augustines friary has been removed from his position pending police investigations on allegations of theft.

In a statement, the Archdiocese of Malta stated that this decision was taken following an agreement between Provincial Fr Leslie Gatt and Archbishop Charles Scicluna.

According to media reports, Fr Debono is being investigated with alleged involvement in the theft of sacred works of art worth around €100,000.

The Curia statement also said that Fr Debono has been stopped from exercising his priestly ministry in public for “as long as police investigations remain pending and court procedures are concluded.”

TVM News and Times of Malta have reported that currently, Fr Debono is on police bail.
