The Malta Union of Teachers and Union of Professional Education have congratulated newly appointed Education Minister Justyne Caruana.

In a statement on Saturday, after Prime Minister Robert Abela unveiled the new cabinet composition following a reshuffle, eleven months into his appointment as head of government, the unions thanked outgoing Education Minister Owen Bonnici as they welcomed Caruana.

Caruana who previously served as Minister for Gozo, had resigned in January 2020 over her husband’s links to Daphne Caruana Galizia murder suspect Yorgen Fenech.

The UPE said that it looks forward to working closely with the newly appointed minister to address the challenges in the sector faced by educators and students alike.

Similarly, the MUT said it looks forward to work with Caruana in order to continue improving the work conditions for educators. MUT also thanked Bonnici who had to face the coronavirus pandemic as soon as he became education minister.
