Two men who are suspected to have been involved in the theft of a considerable amount of cigarettes from a Valletta warehouse have been arrested in a raid carried out on Tuesday afternoon.
The theft had been reported early last month, and investigations led the police to an apartment in Triq il-Qatta in Swieqi.
Accompanied by Customs officials, police officers raided the apartment and arrested the two men, a 54-year-old Swieqi resident and a 26-year-old Mosta resident.
A search yielded 13 boxes, each containing 500 cigarette packs: 130,000 cigarettes in total.
The police said that it appeared that these were set to be sold on the black market, pointing out that a number of the boxes had already been packed in a van belonging to one of the suspects.
The two men are being held at the lock-up in the Police Headquarters, and police investigations are ongoing.
