Friends and family members have taken to social media to mourn the passing of “positive spirit” Alex Calì, after his brother announced his demise early on Wednesday morning.
Calì was the grandson of the artist Giuseppe Calì. Born in Sliema, he moved abroad in the ’60s, returning to Malta in the ’90s.
Well-known as a free-thinker and environmentalist, he had moved to Gozo a few years ago to run a popular drinking establishment.
Sociologist Michael Briguglio called him the “personification of positive spirit. Forever free, forever in our thoughts”, while academic Toni Sant said, ” I’ve known this cool dude all my life, literally, as he was one of the local boys who came to my parents’ bar in Sliema regularly in his young days. He always struck me as a free spirit…and this definitely wasn’t an act.”
Artist Steve Bonello said, “I have met some really wonderful people through Facebook. A very few as wonderful as this lovely man.”
