The Treasury Department is seeking to recover around €1.5 million from various suppliers who had been paid twice for the services they rendered, the Finance Ministry confirmed this afternoon.
However, the ministry assured that the process was going smoothly. It said that the department immediately contacted the suppliers concerned, and that these suppliers were cooperating fully.
The ministry said that the department was carrying out a verification exercise when it flagged a number of double payments.
The mishap, it said, occurred as the government is switching to an accrual accounting system, which records revenues and expenses when they are incurred, not when money actually changes hands. It said that the transition led to some teething troubles which were being addressed.
