The police association Simon Schembri Blue Light Foundation posted on Facebook the news of the tragic death of Ryan Tonna, a 36-year-old Constable. According to media reports, Tonna died while he was dining out. He was given first aid while members of the Red Cross were called to the rescue. In spite of all efforts to save the Constable, he died, apparently choking on his food.
According to the Simon Schembri Blue Light Foundation, Ryan Tonna was always an exemplary member of the force and an inspiration for those who found it hard to believe in their own potential. Constable Tonna was also part of the Drugs Squad.
A spokesperson for the Police confirmed that Tonna died overseas. He was in Pisa, Italy, participating in a running marathon given his love for athletics. On social media, after the marathon, Tonna shared his satisfaction that he had managed to complete his first half marathon.
Several people expressed their grief over the sudden death of Constable Tonna, namely the Blue Light Foundation, the Malta Police Association, the Police Officers Union as well as Evolve Endurance Club.
In the span of two days, the Police lost two respected members of the service. Apart from Ryan Tonna’s death today, yesterday Alfred Sciberras, the traffic policeman, known for letting children ride on the Police bike, too sadly passed away.
