Timeline of a Maltese tragedy


14th October 2013 – Daphne Caruana Galizia places Chairman of Tumas Group Yorgen Fenech’s name in the public domain for the first time, underscoring that careless remarks by Fenech in a published interview show that the power station had been a done deal before the election and the LNG tanker had already been commissioned prior to the award of the contract.

Up to 2015 – Alfred Degiorgio later arraigned for allegedly being one of the executioners in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, also a heavy gambler, reverses a losing streak at Portomaso Casino owned by Yorgen Fenech. Alfred Degiorgio, who was legally unemployed and on social benefits had gambled at the Portomaso Casino €457,000 and walked away with €441,000 clean money, a success rate considered to be incredible as the house, in gambling ‘the house always wins’.

February – May2016 – Daphne Caruana Galizia posts a cryptic blog saying that Minister Konrad Mizzi and his wife will be having New Zealand lamb for Easter. Subsequent revelations in the Panama Papers show that Konrad Mizzi and PMs Chief of Staff Keith Schembri had used Mossack Fonseka to open offshore companies Hearnville and Tillgate.

June 2016 – PN leader Simon Busuttil called Schembri ‘corrupt’ –Schembri retaliates by opening libel suit.

12th January 2017 – Minister Konrad Mizzi chosen by premier Muscat to chair EU Energy committee

20th February 2017 – Daphne Caruana Galizia breaks the news that Keith Schembri and Konrad Mizzi , through their auditors Nexia BT, were trying to set up bank accounts in the Bahamas when the Panama Papers broke out.

21st February 2017 – EU’s PANA Committee chairman Werner Langen says Konrad Mizzi, then chair of the EU Energy committee, could be laundering money. The next day Keith Schembri snubs the committee’s invitation to answer questions.

22nd February 2017 – Daphne Caruana Galizia first writes about 17 Black, a company incorporated in Dubai. The caption story featured a picture combo of Keith Schembri, Konrad Mizzi, Joseph Muscat and former PN Minister and disgraced EU Commissioner John Dalli, the latter with strong ties by marriage to the Fenech family. Prime Minister denies any knowledge of 17 Black.

26th May 2017 – The Malta Independent links Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri to alleged kick-backs on LNG tanker. FIAU leaked report revealed the transfer of money from a company connected to Armada Floating Gas Services Malta, owners of the LNG tanker berthed in Marsaxlokk, to a Dubai-based company created for the purpose of transferring €2 million to Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri.

16th October 2017 – Daphne Caruana Galizia murdered on the day Keith Schembri was called to testify in libel suit he opened against former PN leader Simon Busuttil. Her last post said “There are crooks everywhere you look now. The situation is desperate”

9th December 2017 – The Times reports that specific information regarding the Panama Papers on Konrad Mizzi and Keith Schembri was made available by the German police to Maltese Authorities.

17th April 2018 – The Daphne Project reported that Minister Chris Cardona was seen drinking with one of the persons arraigned for the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. Cardona said he knew the person since he specialises in criminal cases in his profession. He later backtracked on his declaration.

18th April 2018 – the Daphne Project revealed the documents that showed how 17 Black had two target clients: Tillgate and Hearnville.  Keith Schembri had released a statement in which he confirmed that 17 Black had been included as part of a business plan for his Panama company, Tillgate, but nothing had ever come of the plans. Schembri too never clarified what the nature of the business with 17 Black was and who its owners were. Konrad Mizzi denied any connection, ‘direct or otherwise’ with 17 Black.

19th April 2018 – In a newly leaked e-mail obtained by German paper Süddeutsche Zeitung and shared with the Daphne Project, financial advisers Nexia BT, whose main partner, Brian Tonna had , at some point, a desk in the office of the Prime Minister, said the Dubai company would be paying into Schembri and Mizzi’s Panama companies Tillgate and Hearnville via bank accounts they had tried to open in the Bahamas.

9th November 2018 – Reuters names Yorgen Fenech, one of the  power station developers, as owner of 17 Black. Yorgen Fenech denied any wrongdoing.

12th November 2019– Date of Yorgen Fenech’s resignation from various directorships sent to MFSA including Tumas Group and Electrogas.

14th November  2019– PM advises he has recommended Pardon to suspected ‘middleman’

20th November 2019 – Yorgen Fenech allegedly attempts to flee the country and is arrested as a  ‘person of interest’ in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia. Minister Konrad Mizzi in comments to the media said he ‘does not remember’ when he last met 17 Black owner and reiterated his previous statements.
