Apostolic Nuncio to Korea and Mongolia, Archbishop Alfred Xuereb described the summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as “truly historic”.
The signed agreement commits both countries to work together to “build a stable and lasting peace in the Korean Peninsula”.
In an interview with Vatican News, Mgr. Xuereb who has been fulfilling his mission for the last weeks, said that the Church is “filled with hope and belief” but warns that this is only the beginning of a long peace process.
He initially described the summit as a “positive and good” conciliatory speech on peace.
He stressed that the Holy See would like to offer support to any initiative for dialogue and reconciliation.
For his part, Pope Francis made special prayers for the success of the summit, before a crowd of about 20,000 pilgrims gathered in St. Peter Square.
