The first group of female master mariners were honoured on Monday. The group consisted of five women, Abigail Xerri, Carmen Darmanin, Jacqueline Spiteri, Laura Falzon and Pauline Bonnici were the five women who received a memento on becoming the first five Maltese female captains.

During the ceremony, Transport Minister Ian Borg congratulated the women for breaking the rigid gender roles that existed in the maritime industry. He noted how seafaring activities lags behind shore-based roles in the industry when it came to female participation.

Equality Minister Helena Dalli augured that this would be the first step towards parity with the male counterparts in the sector. Dalli remarked that equality harnessed both social and economic benefits saying that the government was mainstreaming gender equality.
