887 students regularly absent from school during last scholastic year

During the last scholastic year, 2018-2019, there were 26,468 students registered within state schools out of which 887 were absent on a regular basis and without medical or any other reasons provided to the school. This information was presented in Parliament by Education Minister Owen Bonnici in reply to a parliamentary question by PN MP Therese Comodini Cachia.

Belgium set to reopen schools, markets, museums and zoos

The Ministry for Education and Employment is coordinating a comprehensive framework for the preparation of the eventual re-opening of educational institutions, the Ministry announced on Wednesday.

Absenteeism increases by 4.3% in primary and secondary schools

Absenteeism during the academic year 2017-2018 increased by 4.3% when compared with the previous academic year. According to data publsihed by the National Statistics Office (NSO), authorised absences increased by 4.1% and made up 61.9% of the total absences.

Lunches still being distributed to children under Scheme 9

After closing the schools, the Government and the Ministry made the necessary arrangments so that the lunches remain delivered on a daily basis to the children that need them. Arrangements have been made to also cater for the children in need who attend Church schools.

Church Schools ballots postponed

The Archbishop's Curia explained that the first ballots that are being postponed are the Participation Ballots for girls and boys for admission into Form 1 and the Participation Ballot for girls for admission into Year 1. These ballots were going to be held on 26 March.

Schools will remain closed until 17th April

Thursday last week, Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that all schools, the University of Malta, MCAST and childcare centres will shut down as from Friday 13th March till Friday 20th. This measure is being extended until further notice after the situation on coronavirus was re eveluated.
