The Malta Employers Association has condemned the government's decision to offer jobs in the public sector to sacked Air Malta pilots at a guaranteed take-home pay.

The pilots' association has filed judicial proceedings against the government urging it to honour contractual obligations which the government had entered into by means of an agreement signed by then-Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi on 26 January 2018.
Pilots union ALPA said that pilots who were laid off by Air Malta are now being offered six-month self-employment contracts with Malta Med Air.
It was also mentioned how in other jurisdictions such as the Netherlands, Spain and Belgium, judges have annulled the dismissals when employers have not respected statutory collective dismissal procedures.
The Airline Pilots Association’s (ALPA) members have voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking industrial action, including possible withdrawal of service.
In a statement, the MHRA remarked that the situation does not only make matters worse for Air Malta but threatens the livelihoods of thousands of employees and operators who depend upon the travel, hospitality and tourism sector.
