Dr Robert Abela has been sworn in as the ninth Prime Minister of Malta. The ceremony was presided over by President George Vella and was held at the Presidential Palace in Valletta. Abela was also invested with the Order of Merit. The new Prime Minister will then proceed to the Auberge de Castille to take over his new office.
Just outside the Presidential Palace, Abela described himself as very moved to be on the brink of being sworn into office. He then proceeded to greet the wellwishers before going inside the Palace. There, after greeting the Palace staff, he had a short private audience with the President. In this audience, the former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, Mrs Muscat and the State Attorney were among those present.

In this first comments to the press, Abela was questioned about his relationship with leadership rival Chris Fearne. Abela said that he had a good relationship with Fearne and that he had no difficulty in working with Mr Fearne. Abela, on exiting the Palace was closely shadowed by Chris Cardona, in the same way, that he did when Abela entered the Kordin Sports Pavillion to address the party faithful as their leader.
