A man was handed a four year suspended sentence after he admitted to causing slight injuries to an official at Ħal Far Tent Village.
26-year-old Youssef Cherkaoui from Morocco who has been held under preventive arrest since 29 June 2019 was accused of slightly injuring an official, breaching public peace and disobeying orders.
The man admitted in court the charges brought against him and offered an apology.
The court in its decision considered that the man had been kept in custody for almost two months and a half.
The man is already in detention because he arrived in Malta irregularly. Taking into account the man’s reality, the court sentenced the man to two years imprisonment suspended for four years.
“A suspended sentence is more than sufficient to deter the accused from committing other crimes. It hangs over his head, like the sword of Damocles,” Magistrate Victor Axiaq said.
