Three days on, the Electoral Commission is yet to receive a nomination for the casual election to replace disgraced former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, who resigned from Parliament on Monday.
Muscat represented the second electoral district, and two Labour Party candidates may choose to succeed him: former parliamentary secretary Stefan Buontempo and Mark Causon. Based on their performance in the 2017 general election, it appears likely that Buontempo would win a casual election – should one be held.
But in the absence of any nominees, the Labour Party will be free to co-opt a candidate of its choice, and The Times of Malta has reported that Prime Minister Robert Abela is seeking such an option to nominate a party heavyweight.
No public statements on the matter have been made by the party, Buontempo or Causon, however.
