Standards Commissioner, George Hyzler is being asked to investigate a backdated medical certificate handed to Parliamentary Speaker, from MP Konrad Mizzi.

The request for an investigation was filed by Independent candidate and former Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Arnold Cassola.

In his statement, Cassola explained that since the 13th of March, until today, MP Konrad Mizzi has never attended Parliamentary sessions and has failed to provide a reason why he has not attended sittings for the past five weeks and for this reason he has been registered as absent.

Arnold Cassola has also explained that the day after Opposition Leader, Adrian Delia, informed Parliament that a Parliamentary motion will be discussed on the 3 hospitals concession agreement to be revoked, Konrad Mizzi sent a medical certificate to the Speaker Anglu Farrugia who informed Parliament on April 21st that Mizzi was being retroactively excused from these missed sessions having previously been marked as absent.

The medical certificate covers missed parliament sessions as from the 13th of March onwards.

In his statement to Standards Commissioner Hyzler, Cassola said that this is unacceptable and has raised doubts on the possibility to use a medical certificate to retroactively excuse a member of Parliament, especially for such a long period of time.

Arnold Cassola continued explaining that this does not only create a precedent but will permit Konrad Mizzi to get paid for all the Parliamentary sittings he failed to attend for weeks.
