“Christmas is a time to try to cheer each other up. As the weather gets colder and colder, the situation for this community in Beirut is becoming more difficult,” explained Stephen Axisa, national director Aid to the Church in Need (Malta).
For this year, ACN (Malta) is inviting Maltese families to share the joy that Christmas brings with Christian families in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
A city in apocalypse
This Christian community in Beirut was hit by the tragedy earlier this year. The devastating explosion of August 4, 2020, which took place right next to the quarter of the city where the majority of Christians live and work, took place.
Fr Michael Zammit Mangion Jesuit Provincial for the Near-East and Maghreb Province, a day after an explosion rocked Lebanon’s capital, described the scene in Beirut as an apocalyptic one.
How to make a donation?
ACN came with the idea that Maltese families make a donation that matches the meal value for one person in the family meal. Donations to ACN (Malta) will be sent to Beirut on Tuesday 1 December 2020, so that there’s enough time for volunteers to distribute by Christmas.
Thus ACN operators in that city will be in time to share the money. -food bought with funds sent from Malta among the community of about 5,000 people, so that they too feel that even the Maltese people are supporting them in this extremely difficult period for them.
One may donate by visiting the organisation’s website (www.acnmalta.org/donate), or by making a bank transfer to APS Account Number 20001771733 or send a cheque addressed to ACN Malta to: “Share your Christmas meal” – Aid to the Church in Need, 39b, Mdina Road, Attard, ATD 9038. One can also contact ACN on 21487818 for more information.
