Spain has become the first western European country to record more than a million coronavirus infections since the onset of the pandemic.

The health ministry announced 16,973 new infections on Wednesday, with the cumulative total now stands at 1,005,295 cases, while the death toll rose by 156 to 34,366.

It has been reported that the Spanish government is considering imposing curfews in some of the worst-hit areas, including Madrid, in an effort to slow down the rate of infection.

The government of the Madrid region, which accounts for almost a third of all Spain’s cases, is in a stalemate with the central government over how to deal with the rise.
