Ships flying the Maltese flag increased by 97% since 2013

Malta’s shipping registry has kept its top position both at EU and Global level, with more than 9,000 ships with a combined gross tonnage of 77 million flying the Maltese flag. Moreover there was an increase of 97% in new registrations since January 2013. During his opening address Transport Minister Ian Borg described 2018 as an “excellent” year for Malta saying that there were twice the amount of cruise liner passengers staying overnight. Borg was speaking during the Malta Maritime Summit which commenced on Tuesday.

In his address, Borg also told those present that they shared the same belief, that shipping was the backbone of international trade and global economy. He said that the blue economy represented a gross value added of over €500 billion per year and provides some 5.4 million jobs.
