The Government of Malta has declared that disgraced Chief of Staff Keith Schembri has returned his diplomatic passport.
A spokesperson for the Ministry for Foreign Affairs told Newsbook.com.mt that Schembri “used to own a diplomatic passport due to the nature of the role he used to occupy.” He said that this passport has now been returned.
Assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia had published a copy of the diplomatic passport Schembri owned back in May 2017. She alleged that Schembri used that same passport to open up a bank account in Panama.
Schembri is currently being investigated in relation to her murder. He insists that he is innocent.
Schembri was last seen in Malta on the 26th December at the Malta International Airport’s VIP lounge with his family.
Earlier in December, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said he felt betrayed by Schembri.
Muscat travelled to Dubai on the 27th December. According to the Government, Muscat is currently on a personal holiday in Dubai. Muscat’s office hasn’t yet confirmed with Newsbook.com.mt whether Muscat will be travelling to London in the coming days.
