MEP Alfred Sant agrees with the European Commission’s proposal on the special scheme regarding VAT exemption for small businesses.
Sant, Shadow Rapporteur for the S&D Group, said this should be done in case European Union member states choose more stringent methods for VAT collection. This was said when addressing the European Parliament’s Committee on Economic Affairs (ECON).
Small businesses affect different countries in different ways; some countries rely more on VAT collected from these businesses than from other countries. Malta, for example, receive higher tax contributions from SMEs.
Sant said that MEPs should vote according to their country’s circumstances.
He showed his support for the establishment of an online registration system for a one-stop-shop for the distribution of VAT returns in different member states to be established by the Commission.
