The Italian far-right party, the Northern League, is considering joining the European People’s Party. Partit Nazzjonalista is a full member of EPP.

The Secretary of the Council of Ministers in the government of Giuseppe Conte, Giancarlo Giorgetti said that such a possibility exists, during TV programme Mezz’ora in più which is broadcasted on Rai 3. Giorgetti spoke of the similarities between his party and that of the Christian Social Union in Bavaria, CSU.

Partit Nazzjonalista did not reply to questions sent in by this newsroom.

There are six Italian political parties members of EPP.

Italian politician Anna Maria Bernini who leads Forza Italia in the senate said that if the League were to join EPP this would empower Italy’s centre-right and it would become more competitive.

The Northern League is known for its hardline against migration and is led by former Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini.
