Mediterranea Saving Humans (MSH) said that the Italian Minister for Internal Affairs Matteo Salvini is blocking the vessel Mare Jonio from entering port. The vessel, which is 13 nautical miles outside of Lampedusa, is carrying a large amount of children.

Mare Jonio is at the limit of the Italian territorial waters south of Lampedusa. It has been in this position since 6am on Thursday. Meanwhile, via Facebook, MSH advised that they have been informed of Salvini’s decree to block the vessel from entry at port on Wednesday at 11.37pm.

The NGO also added that the Italian coastguard had boarded the vessel at around 7am in the morning to inform them of the decree.

MSH have also requested assistance to the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) and the Port Authority in relation to the 99 migrants, particularly the women and children on board. Up until 11am, they were still awaiting a reply on the matter.
