Route for Malta – Sicily gas pipeline project finalised

The maritime and land route for a gas pipeline project between Malta and Sicily has been finalised, Energy Minister Michael Farrugia announced during a visit to Melita Transgas employees on Tuesday.

Melita Transgas is a public company which has been set up to implement the project.

The route is about 151 kilometers long and Malta has presented in a study on its environmental impact to the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA).

The Minister said that before and during the studies, various consultation meetings were held with the local councils, authorities and the public.

Once the project is concluded, it will be linking Malta to the European grid giving the country greater gas transmission capacity.

Melita Transgas launched its website during the visit. The website will be used to publish information related to the project including “important documentation”.
