Roderick Grech murder trial postponed over a technicality

Tista' taqra bil- Malti.

A judge has postponed a murder trial after being told that the list of potential jurors had not been published in the Government Gazette, according to law.

Etienne Bartolo, known as “Il-Vojt”, was due to stand trial over the murder of Roderick Grech, 26, who was stabbed to death in March 29, 2017. The two had allegedly met to settle payment for drugs sold the previous day.

The decree to postpone the trial was issued on Sunday night, however potential jurors turned up inside the courtroom on Monday morning.

Madam Justice Consuelo Scerri Herrera also ordered an investigation into why the list had not been published.

Last week Madam Justice Scerri Herrera dismissed an application by lawyer Franco Debono who is appearing as parte civile for the victim’s family. In the application, it was claimed that the trial would breach their fundamental rights.

The family insisted that the jurors in Malta are not equipped to reach a proper verdict.
