Roberta Metsola entrusted to lead new EU border law

MEP Roberta Metsola has been entrusted as the official European Parliament rapporteur on the new European Union law that will govern the way the European Union’s external borders are managed.

The Metsola Report is expected to revolutionise the way Europe’s borders are protected, help prevent cross-border crime, strengthen the system for the safe return of irregular migrants who are not eligible for protection ion Europe and boast the European Border and Coast Guard.

Roberta Metsola feels honoured of the “mammoth responsibility” also on behalf of Malta and Gozo and she will do her utmost to get it absolutely right. One of the main things that she will be working on is for the EU to have a standing force of 10,000 new border and coast guards by 2020 allowing full immediate response should a new migration crisis arise.

The most important priority for Metsola is to save people’s lives at sea and to safeguard the integrity of the EU external borders amongst others and she will be working around the clock as she is determined to reach a conclusion before the end of the current legislature and before summer 2019.

Roberta Metsola will be meeting stakeholders in Malta and across the EU for their input on the new law.
