Robert Abela elected PL Leader

Robert Abela won Partit Laburista’s leadership election. He will now be appointed as Malta’s new Prime Minister. At final count, Abela obtained 57.9% of votes while Fearne obtained 42.1%. As soon as the vote-counting commenced, Abela took the lead and maintained roughly 60% lead without faltering.

A total number of 16,216 PL members voted in this internal election. Voting ended at 8 pm on Saturday. The turnout was 92.5%. Former leader Joseph Muscat tweeted his congratulations.

In a brief address, together with his wife Lydia, Abela said that the victory left him humbled. ” I thank my friend Chris (Fearne) and look forward to working together for the good of the party and country. There is only one winner today, the Labour Party. Now we must work hard to unite the country” said Abela.

Who is Robert Abela?

Robert Abela is a PL MP hailing from the 6th District.

Abela was born in June 1977 and graduated as a lawyer. Abela grew up in Ħal Qormi where he also worked in a legal office together with his father. He served as a legal consultant to a number of governmental and private entities.

He was elected to Parliament when he contested a general election for the first time. This was in 2017.

Abela is married to Lydia who is also the Secretary of the PL’s Executive. Together they have one girl. Robert Abela is also the son of President Emeritus George Abela who had lost the leadership race to Joseph Muscat.
