Media reports have revealed “further ties” between Daphne Caruana Galizia murder suspect Yorgen Fenech, outgoing Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and his former chief of staff Keith Schembri.

Fenech foots Schembri’s €24,000 Mayo clinic bill

MaltaToday revealed that Yorgen Fenech footed part of Keith Schembri’s bill at Mayo clinic. Self-confessed middleman in Caruana Galizia’s murder in his sworn testimony said that Fenech had told Schembri would run through fire for him [Fenech]. The local newspaper revealed that part of the bill for Schembri’s treatment was footed by Fenech. Slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia had revealed that Schembri had traveled for cancer treatment abroad.

Quoting sources close to the family, the newspaper revealed that Fenech paid two bills for Schembri’s health costs – one bill costing €10,000 and another bill costing €14,000. Fenech also remained by Schembri’s side during part of his stay when he was receiving treatment in Minnesota in 2016 for an eye tumor.

The police has seized Fenech’s electronic devices and was extracting and analyzing the data. Fenech is currently under preventive arrest.

Fenech attended Ali Sadr’s wedding with Muscat and Schembri

LovinMalta revealed that Fenech was also present at the wedding of Pilatus Bank owner and director Ali Sadr Hasheminejad. Muscat and Schembri were also in attendance for the wedding in Italy in 2015.

He was arrested in March 2018 in the USA where he is charged of violation of sanctions, money laundering and fraud and risks a lengthy jail term if found guilty.

Schembri’s lawyer and Chris Cardona have fallen out

The online news portal also reported that lawyer Edward Gatt and Economy Minister Chris Cardona have fallen out. Both Muscat and Cardona were in the past represented by Gatt. Cardona requested Schembri’s removal from Partit Laburista this week. However, Gatt is advising Schembri who is under investigation over the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia.

Muscat’s personal lawyer Pawlu Lia has renounced his brief in cases related to Schembri, as did lawyer Alex Sciberras.

Gatt reportedly told LovinMalta that he still ‘remained good friends with Cardona’. The news portal asked the lawyer whether he advised Schembri to throw away his mobile phone or whether he was involved in the letter which Fenech received through Dr Vella. Gatt denied saying that ‘lawyers never get involved before an act took place’.

According to LovinMalta, Gatt and Cardona used to be very close friends, but have since fallen out.
