A 25-year-old Colombian national has lost his life tragically after he found himself in difficulty while swimming at Coral Lagoon in Mellieħa on Thursday.
A group of three youths, two hailing from Colombia and one from Mexico were swimming at Coral Lagoon. The group found themselves in difficulty due to rough seas and were reported missing to the police at 4.35pm.
A search was initiated involving members of the Armed Forces of Malta and officials from the Civil Protection Department. The police and a medical team were also on site.
A 24-year-old Colombian national was rescued by the Armed Forces of Malta, while a 29-year-old Mexican national climbed a rock to save himself. The latter was rescued using an AFM helicopter. A medical team assisted the two rescued. The third man was found dead after an intensive search.
Duty Magistrate Doreen Clarke is leading the inquiry.
The police is investigating the case.
