Reckless driver arrested after trying to run over police officers

Tista' taqra bil- Malti.

A 23-year-old man was arrested after he tried to run over two police officers who had stopped him over reckless driving in Mqabba last night.

The two Rapid Intervention Unit officers were passing through Triq il-Konvoj ta’ Santa Marija at around 1am when an Opel Astra sped through in a dangerous manner, forcing them to drive to the side of the road to avoid a collision. Consequently, they started pursuing the car, but the Opel’s driver ignored the siren and increased his speed.

The officers succeeded in stopping the vehicle a short distance down, in Valletta Road, and ordered the driver to step away from the vehicle. But the 23-year-old nevertheless sought to drive off, only to be restrained and dragged out of the vehicle. Even so, the police said, the young man continued to act aggressively and refuse to cooperate.

The young man claimed to have taken drugs, and an ambulance was thus called in to take him to Mater Dei Hospital.

The two officers sought treatment at the Floriana Health Centre, where they were certified to have sustained slight injuries.

District police investigations are ongoing.
