Type 2 Diabetes lecture organised by LifeCycle – R.U.S.H.

Newcastle University researcher Professor Roy Taylor will be giving an informative talk on Putting Type 2 Diabetes into Remission at The Courtyard, Hilltop Gardens, Naxxar. A Professor of Medicine and Metabolism at Newcastle University and Honorary Consultant at Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust, Taylor qualified in medicine at the University of Edinburgh.

Prof Roy Taylor has been conducting research on type 2 diabetes since 1978, and has used a wide range of methods to understand the condition. He sequentially studied human adipose tissue, fibroblasts, muscle and then liver and whole body. He worked with Professor Gerald Shulman at Yale in 1990-91, and laid the basis for subsequent research. In 2006, he created the Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre and has focussed on developing techniques to elucidate how food is handled by the body in health and disease.

Recently, he has demonstrated that type 2 diabetes can be reversed to normal by decreasing liver and pancreas fat content, throwing light on the aetiology of a condition previously regarded as complex and heterogenous.

LifeCycle – R.U.S.H. (Renal Unit Support Health Hub), as part of its commitment to support renal patients and persons at risk of kidney failure is organising a series of talks on healthy lifestyle.  Diabetes is a precursor for kidney failure. Helping diabetics to control or even reverse type 2 diabetes will contribute towards the prevention of kidney failure.

Supported by Nestlé Health Science Malta, the talks Putting Type 2 Diabetes into Remission are open to the public and will be held on Friday 3rd May at 5.30pm and on Saturday 4th May at 9.30am at Hilltop Gardens, Naxxar. The session on Friday 3rd May at 8.00pm will be dedicated to medical & healthcare professionals and students. A light reception will follow.
