People being held at the detention centre in Hal Safi protested against their unlawful detention.

Several such protests were staged by asylum seekers who remain detained.

A banner with the word ‘freedom’ was affixed to a wall. A police spokesperson said that the calm protest was over by early afternoon.

Earlier in September a group of non-governmental organisations had called on the government to allocate resources to strengthen Malta’s reception system and create sufficient reception spaces for asylum seekers. The NGOs had stated that ongoing detention of asylum seekers on medical grounds at the Initial Reception Centre and Safi Barracks is unlawful.
