“Proposed developments will change the picturesque Xlendi forever” – Gozitan NGO

Wirt Għawdex

Gozo NGO Wirt Għawdex has expressed its concern to the Planning Authority regarding two current development proposals for Xlendi, stating that “If approved, they will change the aesthetics and the character of the picturesque bay of Xlendi forever.”

The two developments are:

  • PA 03818/20 – proposing the construction of 3-level basement garages with overlying 60 apartments and 6 penthouses over current undeveloped land.
  • PA 04587/20 – proposing the first phase of a project which will see the demolition of Hotel Xlendi and the subsequent excavation of the site. A second phase of the project is indicating the intention to build a 4-star hotel together with 5 levels of parking.

In a statement, Wirt Għawdex remarked that the massiveness of the two adjacent proposed developments is completely out of proportion with the size of Xlendi Bay.

If approved, these two developments will have great repercussions on traffic, waste generation, the quality of life in general, the cleanliness of the sea, and the quality of Xlendi as a holiday destination in itself, to name but a few impacts.

According to the NGO, from an aesthetic point of view, the proposed façade of PA 4587/20 jars terribly with the older houses in Triq San Xmun and does not complement them in any way. These houses are among the oldest structures in Xlendi and Wirt Għawdex believes that they deserve some kind of protection.

It added that it is not against development so long as it is carried out in a controlled manner and in total respect towards the area where development is taking place.
