Tista' taqra bil- Malti.
“Humbled by this honour. I dedicate this award to the public health COVID-19 team, all healthcare workers, front liners, our families, and all the patients. We have grown together to be stronger in fighting this pandemic” said Prof. Charmaine Gauci, Superintendent of Public Health, on her social media as a reaction to the award of Ġieħ ir-Repubblika. Pundits have construed this dedication as a nod to the myriad of health workers who, besides doctors, were front liners in the fight against Covid.
The Presidency was criticised for decorating four doctors while other health professions have been forgotten. The criticism was voiced by the President of the Malta Union of Nurses and Midwives (MUMN) that noted in a statement that other health professionals such as nurses and midwives were not considered.
As the Maltese face of anti-Covid, Prof. Gauci received the honour last Sunday during Republic Day. Along with her, were awarded among others Dr Christopher Barbara, also for his contribution in the fight against coronavirus, and Dr Charles Mallia Azzopardi and Prof. Stephen Montfort for their work in the field of health.
