Prof. Friggieri State-organized funeral will be held Wednesday

The Office of the Prime Minister announced that the funeral organized by the state for Profs. Oliver Friggieri will be held on Wednesday at 14:00.

The praesente cadavere Mass will be held at St. John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta at 2 p.m. and will be con-celebrated by Mons. Charles J. Scicluna, Archbishop of Malta.

Profs. Oliver Friggieri, aged 73, passed away last Saturday. He will be remembered for his vast contribution to Maltese literature.

The government has also decided that tomorrow will be marked as a day of mourning. The Chief Permanent Secretary Mario Cutajar, wrote to the Permanent Secretaries, Directors General, Directors and Heads of Public Entities to fly flags half mast, as a sign of mourning, on public buildings tomorrow.

The funeral cortege will leave Mater Dei Hospital at 12.45 p.m. to the University of Malta where he dedicated most of his time educating students. An appropriate greeting will be given here by the University.

The funeral procession proceeds in front of his private residence in Fleur-deLys, and in front of the Archpriestal Church of St. Publius in Floriana, the birthplace of Prof. Friggieri where he will be greeted by the Floriana Local Council and the Clergy of St. Publius Parish.

After the funeral procession he proceeds to St. John’s Co-Cathedral. Following the Mass, the funeral will proceed in a strictly private form.

The public is informed that due to pandemic restrictions,entrance to the Co-Cathedral of St. John will be strictly by official invitation.

Friġġieri was born in Floriana in 1947, and studied at the University of Malta, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Maltese, Italian, and Philosophy in 1968 and a Masters in 1975. He continued his studies with the Cattolica del Sacro Cuore University in Milan, where he obtained a Doctorate in Maltese Literature and Literary Criticism.

Amongst his acclaimed works one notes – It-Tfal Jiġu bil-Vapuri, Fil-Parlament ma jikbrux Fjuri and Stejjer għal qabel jidlam.
