Private home searches are already permissible under current legislation, the government said in a statement on Monday.

In its reaction to a statement by Partit Nazzjonalista, the government said that not only the Opposition was criticising the proposed rent law reform, but it was against “the mechanics of the law”.

Partit Nazzjonalista hit out at a ‘draconian’ measure which would allow Housing Authority officials to search any private property.

Provided that the occupant of the premises is notified 24-hours before, house inspections are already allowed by law. The Parliamentary Secretariat for Social Accommodation added that the police would assist in such searches.

Partit Nazzjonalista Leader Adrian Delia reportedly said that the Opposition would vote against the proposed law. Adding that the measure shall be “forcefully opposed” as it is ‘draconian and anti-constitutional’.
