The President of the Republic in a very short address on TVM appealed for calm. This was his second such appeal in a space of three days. He said that everyone should leave the institutions do their work so that justice is done.

The President said that he is doing all that he can do within the parameters of the role assigned to him by the Constitution. He added that all the members of the MCESD communicated to him their concern about the possible escalation of the present situation.

Observers noted that while the address of the Prime Minister was preceded and followed by the playing of the National Anthem, the address of the President was preceded but not followed by the National Anthem.

In the midst of national turmoil as the investigations into the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia continue to unfold, Dr Vella announced last week that he cancelled a two-day visit overseas, after also announcing that the yearly President Fun Run had been indefinitely postponed.
