Prime Minister and Partit Laburista leader Joseph Muscat said that poverty is a reality that needs to be challenged.

Muscat said this during a short interview on his party’s radio station on Sunday.

The Prime Minister added that according to the Eurobarometer, 75% of the Maltese population define themselves as middle class. He added that social mobility means social progress and aspirations that their children have an even better future.

Recently, Caritas has said that the National Statistics Office have stated that the gap between high and low earners is widening.

According to Joseph Muscat, the poverty rate in Malta is decreasing and stated that 7 individuals are getting out of the poverty spectrum. He believes that this is a result of the government’s measures.

He added that the Maltese population has increased in the past years and therefore one has to look at the poverty rate and not the amount of individuals classified as poor. Muscat further elaborated that the latest statistics do not include the effect of the last two budgets.
