Well informed sources close to the government have told Newsbook.com.mt that there is a distinct possibility that Pope Francis will overnight in Malta on his upcoming visit. The same sources said that it is likely that His Holiness will arrive on Saturday 30th May in the afternoon. As is usual in such visits, the Pope will visit the highest authorities of the country.
From his meetings with the President and the Prime Minister, His Holiness will, most likely proceed to Gozo for a visit to the shrine of Ta’ Pinu where he will intone vespers.
Overnighting at the Nunciature, the Pope will then proceed with a full day’s program in Malta on the 31st May.
The programme has not been finalized but there is a pattern followed in most Papal visits which one assumes will also be followed in Malta. In the light of all this and of what has already been said Newsbook.com.mt made its predictions. A spokesperson for the Archbishop’s Curia said that the details of the program will be announced in due course.
Pope Francis will make the first trip by a pontiff in 10 years to Malta in May, where he is expected to defend the rights of migrants trying to reach Europe. The pope, who has made defence of migrants a major part of his papacy and has often called the Mediterranean a cemetery, has criticised the closing of ports.
