During the Sunday Angelus Pope Francism has reiterated the global ceasefire called for by the United Nations Security Council resolution, in order to combat the Coronavirus pandemic.

On the 1st of July, the Security Council unanimously approved Resolution 2532 (2020) which called for “a general and immediate cessation of hostilities in all situations. Pope Francis has encouraged this step forward. He insisted that this “will enable the indispensable peace and stability necessary to provide the humanitarian needs desperately and urgently needed.”

Antonio Guterres, Secretary General of the United Nations, last March had strongly called for a ceasefire. “The fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war.” He emphasized that ” that is why today, I am calling for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world.  It is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives.”

Pope Francis has reiterated his hope that for the good of so any suffering people, such a resolution is put into force effectively and quickly. “I hope that this resolution by the Security Council”, concluded the Pope, “is the first courageous step for a future of peace.”
