Partit Nazzjonalista leader Adrian Delia announced that the party will be supporting Partit Laburista veteran and former Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella’s nomination as Malta’s next President.
Delia was addressing a party activity held in Mosta on Wednesday.
The Nationalist leader said that the Party decided to vote in favour putting the national interest above partisan interest.
The PN has repeatedly called for the next president to be appointed by two thirds of the House, Delia reminded those present. He then recalled how the Nationalist Party had appointed George Abela as president describing the act as a courageous one, saying the PN was not afraid to choose someone from the opposing political camp. Delia also mentioned how former PN leader and Opposition leader had led the parliamentary group to support outgoing president Marie Louise Coleiro Preca’s nomination.
The Nationalist leader said he had wished to see the 10th President of the Republic appointed by two thirds of the House as this, in his words, would have curbed the absolute power held by the Office of the Prime Minister.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat announced that he had submitted Vella’s nomination to Coleiro Preca. The nomination was approved by both Cabinet and PL’s parliamentary Group.
