‘Planning Authority is not protecting the coast’ – AD

Alternattiva Demokratika

Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party said that the Planning Authority has failed to protect the coast during a press conference held in St Julian’s on Saturday morning.

Chairperson Carmel Cacopardo said that while declarations in favour of protecting the coastline were made in parliament, these were in conflict with the coastal development currently ongoing.

The Green Party chair recalled how various environmental non-governmental organisations had submitted requests for various sites to be granted protection under the Public Domain Act, however the Party said that their requests have been placed on the back burner due to the lack of political will to act upon such requests.

AD accused the planning watchdog of failing in its duty to protect the coast as it approved three different permits relative to the site where their press conference was held on Saturday morning. AD warned that a fourth permit is in the pipeline. The Party observed that in reports drawn up by the same watchdog, no reference is made to protect the coast and ensure that it is accessible.

The Party likened the encroachment taking place on pavements to the encroachment on the coastline as well as the sea.
