Partit Laburista did not deny the allegations that the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) harmed a boat carrying migrants, but admitted that it was disgusted at the criminal complaints made against the AFM.

In a press release, Partit Laburista said that there has been a “systematic attack” on AFM members. At no point in its press release did the PL deny the allegations made about the AFM in international media.

The party stated that it is disgusted at the action taken by PN Justice Shadow Minister Jason Azzopardi, along with ex PN Secretary General Paul Borg Olivier and Lawyer Andrew Borg Cardona against members of the AFM, particularly the staff of patrol boat P52. The three men are representing NGO Repubblika, who has filed two criminal complaints before the Police Commissioner, one against Prime Minister Robert Abela and Brigadier Jeffrey Curmi and the second against P52 crew over the alleged intentional sabotage of a rubber boat carrying asylum seekers.

On Wednesday five asylum seekers were reported dead by the International Organisation of Migration after a boat of 51 survivors which was adrift in the Maltese search and rescue region was brought back to Libya. Another seven migrants are believed to be missing.

Partit Laburista said that the AFM members risk their lives to defend and see to the country’s interests, and called them heroes. The party echoed the government’s stance in this issue, saying that currently, all the nation’s resources are being used to combat the spread of coronavirus, so the country cannot afford to rescue the migrants.
