Several activities were scheduled for Independence day, to mark 54 years since Malta became an independent country.
The celebrations started with the departure of the Maltese Armed Forces Band together with the Guard of Honour from Misraħ il-Ħelsien to Republic Street in Valletta. This was followed by a Pontifical Mass and the Te Deum in St Johns Co-cathedral, led by Archbishop Charles Scicluna. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and several other Ministers and Members of Parliament attended this Mass.
At the end of the Pontifical Mass, Maltese President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, the Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and Opposition Leader Adrian Delia placed flowers over the Independence Monument in Floriana.
Meanwhile, a concert was organised by the Maltese Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Mro Micheal Laus, with the participation of the mezzo soprano Claire Massa in San Anton Gardens, Attard.
