The ‘Tree of Hope’ is the first ever crochet Christmas tree on Gozo.

The tree, which was made with great love by a group of volunteers from the Gozo Crafty Ladies will be officially lit on Sunday 29th November in the village of Kerċem.

Over 100 lap blankets were sewn together to cover the tree. After Christmas they will be distributed to various causes on the islands.

The Gozo Crafty Ladies – Kercem Branch is made up of a group of local and foreign ladies whose aim is to help charities and missions by working crafts, mainly knitting and crochet, to be donated.

Over the past months they have sent items to the NICPU and Maternity Ward at Mater Dei Hospital, sent scarfs and hats to a refugee camp in Greece, donated Christmas crafts to be sold for mission funds, and missionaries have taken items to Ethiopia, Peru and Guatemala to be handed out there. They are also helping a cancer-related foundation with regular donations of lap blankets and hats for chemo patients.

The group meets every Friday between 4.00 and 6.00pm at the Kercem Local Council in a room kindly offered by the local mayor and committee. The group does not accept monetary donations, but appreciates the donation of any yarn or wool.

Everyone is welcome to join them, young and old, to knit or crochet, have a coffee, or just chat and have a laugh. Their Facebook page may be found here.
