Alternattiva Demokratika and Partit Demokratiku will merge as one party to contest the next elections, Newsbook.com.mt has learnt.
Speaking to Newsbook.com.mt, interim PD leader Timothy Alden said that the two small parties have held similar views on a number of issues for a long time and would like to continue growing together as one party in an attempt to offer a stronger opposition.
Prior to the foundation of Partit Demokratiku, Alternattiva Demokratika representatives had been involved with talks with Marlene Farrugia who had just resigned from the ruling party and sat as an independent MP in the previous term. Partit Demokratiku was founded in October 2016. Alternattiva Demokratika, however, did not join Forza Nazzjonali, when Partit Nazzjonalista and Partit Demokratiku joined forces in a pre-electoral coalition dubbed Forza Nazzjonali.
In his comment to Newsbook.com.mt, Alden explained that the discussions went on for several months but the decision came after an executive committee meeting which was held on 25 September.
