Constable Simon Schembri will be one of the first to benefit from the new Orthotics and Prosthetics Unit (OPU) in Karen Grech hospital.
Schembri was the victim of the traffic incident in Luqa last month.
The new OPU was opened by The Minister for Health, Chris Fearne. He announced that PC Schembri will be given one of the most advanced artificial prosthetics in the coming days.
This unit will be providing its service to more than 15,000 patients. This high demand is tied to the high rate of diabetes in Malta. The manufacturing of prosthetics can now be take place locally.
The new centre is working in collaboration with American Medical Centre Orthotics and Prosthetics. An American professional was brought to Malta, making the treatment available during the week. Hence patients no longer have to wait 2 months for service.
