Chetcuti Cauchi head denies, ‘allegations and insinuations’

Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo accepted the claim made by Repubblika and ordered an in genere inquiry both on the Dr Jean Chetcuti on a personal basis as well as on his operations as director of Chetcuti Cauchi Advocates. The inquiry  was ordered to “establish if the facts as reported amount to trading in influence as established in Maltese law”.

Republika’s stand

When the news of the French sting was made public, rule of Law NGO Repubblika said that information uncovered could amount to 10 likely breaches of Maltese law.

Repubblika applied for a police investigation submitted to the Magistrate’s court, alleging that there were likely breaches of the following articles of the Maltese Criminal Code; 18, 42, 48A, 83A, 115, 120, 121, 121(A), 141, 188, 189.

Questions put to the Police force at that time by Newsbook.com.mt have so far remained unanswered.

This forms part of the NGO’s call for an in genere inquiry to investigate ‘suspected trading in influence’ which emerged from the ‘Enquête Exclusive’ program broadcast on the French TV station ‘M6’. The program, aired the previous week, uncovered, through the use of hidden cameras, how a senior partner within the Maltese law firm Chetcuti Cauchi boasted to the undercover journalist that they had personal connections to key members of the current government.
