Passenger caught with €75K in undeclared cash

A passenger who had just arrived from Bucharest was found to be carrying €75,000 in undeclared cash by Customs officers.

In a statement on Friday, Customs said that the passenger was selected for a currency check at the Malta International Airport’s arrival lounge by the Anti-Money Laundering Team.

The passenger denied carrying any cash when asked by the officers. He was escorted to the Customs Office. A search yielded a Bank Draft amounting to €75,600.

The police took the man in custody for further investigation.

Customs reminded that passengers are obliged to declare any amount of cash including Cheques and Bank Drafts which amount to 10,000euros or more whether arriving, departing or transiting through Malta.
